ELGIN
After passing the village of Sir Lowry's Pass and then climbing the actual mountain pass of the same name, the scenic Caledon/Bredasdorp branch reaches the railway station of Elgin, formerly an extremely busy station in apple season where trains moved the fruit of the district down to Cape Town. Although Elgin is only really a railway station, with nearby Grabouw being the main town of the area, the importance of the station could be seen by the fact that the whole district was generally known by the name of Elgin.
Although the branch line remains only, Elgin is sadly only a shadow of its former self with the former extensive trackwork reduced mostly to a main line and loop. The station featured a small lever frame, but this was removed around 1987 and the station building, seen here, is in poor condition, but you can still see where the former signalling area was.
