THE HEARTLAND

The Free State and Northern Cape provinces were scenes of classic steam photography including many of the last steam main and secondary lines, including De Aar to Kimberley. Alongside the steam was much semaphore signalling, but the electrification of the De Aar to Kimberley put pay to the semaphores on that line as well as any dreams of a steam resurrection. Semaphores remain in a few locations on the Vereeniging to Kroonstad section in this area.
