GARDEN ROUTE
The secondary lines between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, and from Mossel Bay to the main Port Elizabeth line at Rosmead have been immortalised in many railway photographs, incorporating many scenic sections such as the Outenikwa Pass, Toorwaterskloof, Lootsberg Pass and the sadly now-closed George to Knysna branch. Traffic was always light on these lines but there was still a fair amount of semaphore signalling throughout this system, mostly small installations, but including a 40 lever frame at Oudtshoorn which was the last installation to survive on these lines, signalling being removed there in 1999. The remaing open lines are now all controlled using radio communication.
