WESTERN CAPE
The lines around Cape Town include some busy suburban routes, the main line to the north and a number of scenic secondary and branch lines. There was a fair bit of semaphore signalling until recent times, including some locations on the branches to Bitterfontein and Bredasdorp/Protem. The box at Malmesbury was one of the last installations on a secondary line, but signalling was removed here in 2007.
The suburban system contains a fair proportion of the remaining semaphores in South Africa, including the last stations on the Cape Town-Johannesburg with semaphores at Paarl and Huguenot, as well as single line signalling on the Stellenbosch loop and Strand branch. So for now, you can see semaphores in the romantic winelands, but for how much longer, one doesn't know.
